Eating Seasonal Foods

I’ve already discussed in a previous post the differences between organic vs not organic, and organic vs local foods. And today I would love to talk about another big issue, the importance of buying Seasonal Foods.

As much as I love Summer and all the stone fruits, melon, watermelon… I am also very happy when the Autumn arrives. I love the changes between seasons, trees change colour, weather patterns shift, a new cycle begins. But the mos exciting is the delicious new seasonal fruits and veggies.

Pairing your diet with seasons was something that happen without any effort, it was natural for our ancestors. But nowadays we are able to find everything anytime of the year, it can sound good but I would like to point some benefits of eating a diet based on seasonal products:

PRICE, seasonal ingredients are more abundant and also cheaper. They also come from local sources. You just need a little planning and making the effort to fit it in your lifestyle.

TASTE, fruit and veggies that are grown and picked when they naturally mature with the sun are fresher and contain more nutrients that make them taste super delicious. That’s why a fresh squeeze orange juice will always taste better in winter than in summer.

ENVIRONMENT, few things to consider like the contamination of a plane that transports fruits from the other side of the world and also the food wastage. If we consume local food we ensure good for local economy and also less impact in the sustainability of the food supply.

CULTURE, get social at farmer markets, know your farmer and connect with people who love fresh and seasonal produce as much as you do.

NUTRIENT CONTENT, we need different nutrients depending on the season and the natural growth produce is perfectly designed to support our health. To help us alkalize and get ready for hotter days in the spring there are more abundance of leafy greens or why apples grow in the autumn? to help us get rid of excess heat before winter.

So now there is not excuse for eating seasonal. Don’t forget to plan and to make your shopping list according to what’s in season and support your local community, your health and your finances.
